According the the U.S. Dept. of Justice, 1 out of every 178 Americans is in the penal system today. That's not 1 out of every 178 adults, it's our entire population.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, if present trends hold, by 2010 1 out of every three American black males will either be in prison, jail, or on probation.

These statistics represent a system apparently feverishly bent on criminalizing as much of the population as possible. Americans simple aren't that "bad" as a people. Rather "our" system is becoming severely disfunctional. A tipping point surely can't be far away. I fervently hope we can pull back from the edge we're approaching.
