A family dropped off a 15 month old girl and we have raised her for the past 7 years almost exclusively. We have petitioned the court to have legal custody, but biological g-mother and mother have kidnapped her against her will. DHR now involved and on our side, but family is "hiding" her and telling DHR she is in another state. The 9 yr. old had threatened to run away to come back to our home. She is actually about 2 hours from our home. Can we get in trouble if we see her, and she runs to us, and we take her? The court date is set up for the end of July. Our attorney said since no one has custody thru the courts, we cannot get in trouble legally. Please help? The biological family has been proven unfit and they have threatened to take the girl and no one would ever see her again. We miss her so much. She has been gone for 5 weeks and the legal system is so slow.DHR said they can't remove her nor can the police until they answer the door. Please give me any info that will help! Thanks!
