Considering your age, but the time you consult and hire an attorney, file the petition, have the other party served, wait for their response or lack thereof, hassle with family arguments that it's going to cause and all the bad feelings, attend mediation, hearings and conferences and what not....not to mention the money it's going to cost...you'll be 18 and legal able to make your own choice before you ever get to a final hearing.
In other words...go with the flow and let the current situation ride.
