Graham,

Thanks for the message and I did read your attached letter.

I wish I had something hopeful to say about the chance of getting a response. But here are a few thoughts/recommendations that might improve your chances.

* Your letter is very plain. You are writing to spiritual leaders (and I assume you want a spiritual response), but you really don't make any spiritual arguments at all? It seems you are happy to also settle for a 'rebuttable presumption' of joint custody, a weak formulation.

What about a foundation in the sanctity of the family?

One recent thought I had was the supremacy of conscience in guiding our actions and love of our children,

* Where is the issue of 'right' mentioned? I think you just use the word 'unjust' once? What great spiritual right is at stake here? What moral imperative is being blocked (and I think
it is the imperative that we love and nurture our children)?

* At least in our recent US History, churches were certainly not leading the charge against segregation and I really don't expect them to get concerned about family law -- until we, as parents, begin to make it an issue ourselves. Then they would be happy to follow once they see public support. Organized faiths also have a political agenda and political connections and they don't want to put any of that a risk. I think they also gauge importance by public response, media coverage -- and right now, unfortunately, equal parenting just isn't on the radar. We need to get it there.

Well, I hope this gives you a few ideas. I want you to know I quite agree with your basic goal and the the churches should be involved in this -- but what are 'we' doing?

Best regards!
John Murtari
