Mary Kay and other female sex offenders convictions are often scrutinized due to the pervading idea that they are given preferential treatment in regards to sexual assault as opposed to men. Mary had sexual relations with a 13 year old boy and served only 180 days. These were extraordinary circumstance, considering the age of her rape victim.
Incidentally, Mary Kay LeToiurneau's victim, Fualaau, dropped out of school at age 15, and has struggled with substance abuse and depression since. That is true even though he married his abuser.
Funny thing is that in 2002, he and his mother (who has custody of the two children he fathered with Letourneau) failed to convince a jury that the school district and a local police department should be held liable for damages to him caused by the affair.
