I was a single parent for 5 years as well and had a similar experience. My ex did not pay his support but was always there for our child in every other way. He just did not make much money. He only owed me 3,000 and the state 2,000. They were going to put him in jail for the money he owed me, but I signed a paper dropping the back support, because I decided that I would rather have him there for our child then have a paycheck.
