In Minnesota, a custody evaluation is almost always autmoatice, whether requested by either party, if the parents have a significant dispute regarding the custody award.

Psychological testing is not the norm. It happens when one party complains that the other has behavioral issues that are significant. Often the custody evaluator make s a determination whether those allegations are sufficient to warrant the time, expense and intrusiveness of a psychological evaluation or even a chemical dependency evaluation.
