Dear Lawmoe,

There is a huge controversy at the moment in the UK over whether adoption agencies should be forced to accept gay couple for consideration or not.

The Catholic church here runs a number of adoption agencies, that are said to be prepared to help the most disadvantaged and severely handicapped children. Catholics provide homes for 25% of those requiring adoption, far above their proportion in the population, and yet because the Catholic church has its views on homosexuality, and therefore sends such couple to other agencies at the moment, it is deemed as descriminating against them. How can it not do what it does if it is not to act against its own conscience? Anyway our government is prepared to see these well established adoption agencies closed down rather than revise their dogma on discrimination, even though they have done so much good work for so long (and just imagine the amount of care required to make a successful placement for a difficult child).

Isn't that a good example of how "Equality" can become a complete nightmare and totally unfair to some people. Will children benefit when these Catholic adoption agencies close down (putting aside whether gay couples can present more risks to the children in the first place, as I think may be borne out by some statistics I've read)?

All the best, Graham
