When my daughter relapsed after 7 months' sobriety, I picked up a picture of my x in my daughter's room and threw it in the trash. As many of you know, I tend to blame my x for our daughter's drug addiction since x and her h promote drug use. It appears that x sent D a pot pipe in the mail, though I am not certain. It was sitting unused next to the photo and an opened box from x. This is typical of x and I was mad.

Later, when my anger settled, I regretted discarding the photo of x so I retrieved it, but I couldn't really restore it. It is streaked and ruined.

I know this was a photo that my daughter liked, so it was bothering me. So yesterday I called my x and asked her to get a portrait done and framed to send to our home. I insisted that she send me the bill and that I would pay. X thought this was a great idea, but she didn't see why I should pay. (What a reversal of the usual argument!) Finally I admitted what I did and why I wanted to pay.

She didn't seem to be mad about me defacing the picture, but she did agree that it was a valid reason for me to foot the bill for the portrait. The only question left is how to explain this to my daughter.
