I was in court yesterday on an unrelated item to support a friend as a witness.
On the courts docket before what my friend was there for was a woman seaking to get a restraining order against her boyfriend or husband. The woman stated her case, the judge asked her a couple of questions, one being when was the last time that she was beaten and she answered that she had been beaten that morning and he had hit her in the face. The judge granted the restraining order. The whole process took less than 2 minutes. Now, you ladies who read this do not think that I am bashing womanhood nor am I standing up for any man that hits or abuses a woman, please.

The matter that I was before the court to support was equally dispatched very quickly and my friend was directed to file some papers with the court clerk outside the courtroom. In the line in front of us was the woman who just received the restraining order and a friend. The conversation between the two of them disqusted me. The woman who was granted the restraining order was nervous and the two of them were talking openly seeming not to care who could hear them. The woman stated to her friend that she had been nervous that the judge would ask her to prove that she had been abused. Her friend countered by saying that they never ask you that and that she had done the same thing when she decided to get divorced. The woman who just got the order said "oh, I did not know that he hit you" the friend said "oh he didn't-I did it for the same reason you are doing it". I did not hear anymore of the conversation because they were called to the clerks window. What I heard was enough. I was stunned and was not sure what to do, and I did nothing. Now I feel horrible because I think I witnessed an abuse of the system and I did nothing.
