I have to agree with Jim. Proof is in the fact that my state (Florida) already has very clearly stated laws against gender bias in custody decisions. It hasn't accomplished much at all.

What is one more legal screen door going to do for this submarine?

If a judge (not a lawyer) specifically states that the reason he/she is denying you custody or equal custody is due to your gender then you have grounds for appeal. Good luck getting the decision reversed on appeal, though.

Judges are not required to give reasons for a custody decision, nor are most of them foolish enough to cite gender bias as any part of their reasoning, whether it is the true reason or not.

Even if you could rid the family court of all gender bias you would still have a problem. One of two fit parents would still be lost to the child - except every other weekend - no matter which parent prevails. If a child loses a good, loving mother that is no more reason to cheer than the loss of a good, loving father.

Equality doesn't mean that Dads win the battle as often as Moms do. Equality means that there is no battle: The child preserves a relationship with both Mom and Dad.
