we might be better off with no political parties whatsoever, just elected officials with no other affiliation.

We don't have democratic government anyway, which is defined as "one man / one vote" (and more recently, allowing women to vote too). Not as far as federal elections for President are concerned, anyway. That's what the electoral college is, a purposeful plan to avoid democratic vote, written right into the Constitution.

I'll have to mull that one over a while.
