there's no greater government waste than in defense spending. Even presuming that some high level of defense spending is necessary, the US government could reduce defense spending by say, 30% overall. If nothing else changed, the US government budget would be balanced rather quickly (along with all the other good things that entails) and we would still be the country with the highest defense budget in the world (even presuming that is desirable, which I don't).
I haven't run the exact numbers, so I'm disclaiming them now. I'm just trying to illustrate a point.
