I think you've had the short answer there, albeit its also the true answer in the strictest sense.

However, though I don't know your laws I do know that in many jurisdictions the views of the children are taken into account in issues of contact and custody, with an increasing weight being given to them as they get older (the age of twelve carrying some kind of significance too).

P.S. Many people on this forum are reticent about the use of children's views because we know how easily they can be swayed by one or other of their parents, and we severely doubt the ability of those in authority to correctly or fairly interpret the views they're given.
